MARLYN (MARLEN) DANIEL  - BRIGHT NEW PROSPECT FOR SOUTH WALES

in a bid to regain former glory as a local football powerhouse, south wales have gone on an aggressive campaign of scouting and recruiting talent, as it prepares for its 29th football season.   not surprisingly they have started by  recruiting the holder of the no. 1. shirt , the custodian and goalkeeper in marlyn daniel.  he is a seventeen year old from vieux fort, born on the 17th of september, 1987.  he was the second string national under 20 goalkeeper when the team last toured jamaica.  he recently graduated from the anse ger secondary and plays for roots alley in the vieux fort competition.  south wales will also be investing in a defender and a forward.  under the rules of the mon repos interclub competition only two outside players can be on the field at any one time, representing  a club.  this recent move by south wales is sure to have defending champions and top contenders like young strikers, la poine 4h, pyo and lumbard shaking in their socks.  a top team in mon repos can be expected to play as many as 27 games between july and november.

CONGRATS DANDA!!!

in this season of graduation ceremonies we invite and expect persons to submit their photographs along with a short biodata.  surely one would like to share their achievement with their family, friends and community.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO "BREEZE"

hubert fevrier, affectionately known a "breeze" celebrates his birthday anniversary of the 26th day of june of every year.  he is one of saint lucia's most celebrated musicians and certainly the most outstanding musical exponent from the east coast.  his signature tunes include "ti croix" and "wasco".  previously a band leader to sunrise playboys and conquerors, he also featured under the name estasy.  he is now more of a soloist having mastered the saxaphone to produce a musical unique rendition that make him one of the most popular soloist in saint lucia.  his contribution to the art form and to the development of musical talent amongst youngsters is perhaps unrecognised.  the number of persons he tutored in the field, as a band leader is perhaps rivalled only by the professional bodies of royal saint lucia police band and the saint lucia school of music. it would not be farfetched to say that he has played at every venue of note in saint lucia.  as a musical ambassador he also played on one of the most popular tourist ships during the late eighties to early nineties.  breeze as a soloist continues to be in great demand at private parties and well as public venues as well as special festivals.  he has operated a recording studio which has produced the sound track to his hits as well as that of some of our popular calypsonians.

happy birthday breeze from the people of mon repos - at home and abroad.

VIVA QUARTER FINALS & FRUTA FINALS SET FOR MON REPOS THIS WEEKEND

The following is an extract from a "Google search".  With the benefit of hindsight, does'nt it make interesting reading?

mon repos: cricketing stronghold

(september 23) - there's probably no region in st. lucia that has been as consistent in the sport of cricket as mon repos. over the years one recalls great players of the likes of henry wilson, ismond monrose, the serieux brothers and of course brian stephen. mon repos won the 1995 inter-district championship; they made it back to the 1999 piton beer inter-disctrict final, where .they lost to gros islet. not satisfied with just making the final, mon repos' cricket administrators are already making plans for the 2000 season and beyond.
a committee comprising former players patrick augustin, marcellus serieux, octavian charles, bernard gaston, dennis james and nicholas jean-baptiste recently held a meeting to prepare for next year's domestic competition and to set the foundation for the development of the sport in st. lucia. a number of decisions were made which are sure to affect the mon repos team's performance in years to come. among other things, the committee looked at coaching, facilities, sponsorship and an expanded season for the mon repos league.
the committee has proposed that all teams in the mon repos league ought to have an official coach. jean-baptiste says that the committee is looking into staging a series of clinics to prepare coaches for the 2000 season. also proposed was an expanded mon repos season, beginning in january with the slbc shield competition. under a sponsorship deal with caribbean metals limited, all cricket venues in mon repos will be equipped with scoreboards. the mon repos committee will be atempting to secure further sponsorship deals.
mon repos has a very solid youth structure, and a youth development programme is being put in place to nurture junior players. special mention was made of women's cricket, which will be officially recognised by mon repos' youth and sports council. the committee also examined the state of umpiring, selection criteria and ground maintenance. the comprehensive work done by this committee ought to serve mon repos cricket well.

LEOLA RESPONDS TO THE PLIGHT OF GANESH

following our story on ganesh a few weeks ago, leola (leona) a relative new commer to our website has responded by making a contribution towards easing the relief on ganesh and his family.  ganesh has been a paraplegic from age five after her was knocked down by a motor vehicle within the school zone of the patience community.  though confined to his bed most of the time he has developed an enormous artistic talent.  in the enlarged photo we see the wider members of his family including his young cousin amanda (patience combined school) who is like his marketing manager as she sells a lot of his drawings and paintings at her school and the wider community.  merline is seen making a presentation on behalf of her cousin/sister leola who was obviously touched by the story.   we hope that this gesture will encourage others to adopt a favourite charitable cause.

WEBMASTER'S NOTE

whilst great care is taken in ensuring that our website reflects positive comments borne out of a developing community, and constructive criticism based on informed opinions, it must be emphasised that the comments in the guest book reflect knowledge or lack thereof only up to the time of writing.  information can be superseded. typographic errors can creep in, and of course persons may subsequently become enlightened.  this webmaster wish to state that neither the website nor the contributors can be held legally responsible for the consequences of any error,  omission or malicious statement there may be.  it is encouraging however that persons are at least taking the opportunity to express their views and quite frankly, opening a debate however far-fetched.  all we ask is that at all times your right of expression is always subject to the rights of others, especially when such an excercise is conducted in a public medium where some may not be able to defend themselves.  we think that to suggest that there is bias in featuring certain persons and not others is unfounded.  we think that the myriad of suggestions coming out in a manner as though this medium, purely voluntary and with little resource, has a duty to undertake certain steps immediately, is unfair.  a lot of the initiatives that have been undertaken in our presentation is just "feeling out", "sounding out", just seeing how people react, and what are their areas of interest.  the decision to feature someone or write a story about an individual is usually something done in spare time or on the spur of the moment.  purely voluntary!! no particular outstanding skill or training - no professional organization to support. just as we put certain business cards.  it is not done at the exclusion of others.  perhaps by the time we do a feature on "joe blo", with the benefit of experience. we may have a hi-tech presentation with music and video clippings etc. and certainly a wider readership.  it was therefore in poor taste to suggest that nick should have featured so and so before lench fevrier and nick should "treat peter like you would treat paul".  such a suggestion is mischievous and can only breed hatred and division in a small community. quite franklym, it is distasteful when it comes from persons who ought to know better and know the integrity of the individuals in question.  having said that, we once again for the umteenth time, invite all persons to submit articles, stories, milestones or to advertise their skill or business.

we look forward to assisting you in any way possible.  no act of kindness is ever wasted.

FACTS I NEVER REALISED ABOUT THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE

there are 39 books in the old testament, generally separated into 4 divisions.
1. the pentateuch, traditionally designated as the 5 books of moses.
2. historical books, numbering 12, from jushua to esther.
3. poetical books, numbering 5, from job to song of solomon.
4. prophetical books, including the writings of the 4 major prophets, from isaiah to daniel, and the 12 minor prophets from hosea to malachi.

THE DREAD, THE BALLHEAD AND THE PRIME MINISTER

on a lighter note after the opening ceremony nick mediates an animated discussion between calypsonian /artist extrodinaire yardie and prime minister kenny anthony.  the discussion focussed on calypso, sports and the lastest happenings in the community.

JOHN "BENO" ALBERT - HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY & HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

we are pleased to send father's day greetings and a happy 50th birthday anniversary greetings (19th june) to john albert affectionately known as beno of st. marie, patience, mon repos but now living in augier with his common-law wife mavis cooman and his daughters shannia and devi.
beno attended the mon repos combined school.  he has been associated with the clubs clou fer, effix sports club but is currently a key member of south wales sports club.  representing south wales in the inauguaral 2005 frua limited overs cricket competition he had the outstanding average of 100.  in the first independence road relay, beno anchored the race for a victorious south wales club when he held back johnny james of pyo in the final half mile to ben's gas station.  beno was a useful cricket allrounder for the mon repos 11 during the 1980's.  he has always come across as a friendly and cooperative team member who loves sports and competes aggressively.
beno urges the younger persons to take sports seriously and participate actively so that they can look as young as he does.  when he is not playing hardball cricket in the mon repos domestic league, beno plays windball cricket in the augier/cantonment league.  he prides himself in a simple life that excludes  smoking, liquor and parties (sound boring, does it?!!).  he remembers his classmates at the mon repos combined school, like georgie, berthia, ida, jusintha (claret), yolande (mc diamed), eugenie, ya yaw, edo, julian, george charles and arthur charles.
beno does not remember having a fight or any bad relationship with any one.  he was raised as a catholic, followed the adventist for a while but strums a lot of the joseh niles tunes on his guitar.  he knows virtually all of them.
he does farming and landscaping.  beno is a truely remarkable and friendly guy to know.  happy birthday and happy father's day to john beno albert.
give him a call: 454 6553 / 719 8171

MON REPOS YOUNG (FLOWERS) WOMEN WHO ARE LIVING OVER YONDER.

the following is a list compiled by mathaline walter.  i am sure it is not exhaustive.  i suspect that there will be cries of "discrimination" since the list comprise of women of a not so old category.  anyway i think you will have a lot of fun picking out those you know, those who were left out but should have been on the list, and of course those you had completely forgotten.  one thing for sure, is that this list seem to have outdone the men's list that was featued a few weeks ago.  was it a case of "nom fini" or it is more difficult to account for the whereabout of our men?  in anycase we thank mathaline for the list and send out greetings from mon repos to all of you - mamay laki.   mamay mopo.  we will never forget you all, so pleae remember us.

ABANDONED FOUNDATION

the former residents of this seemingly peaceful spot sought peace and comfort elsewhere after educating themselves of the potential danger that lay ahead.

HIGH-VOLTAGE IN THE HEART OF PRASLIN

concerns have also been raised about magnetic fiels given off by faulty household wiring, by high current conductors concealed in the walls, ceilings and floors of commercial office buildings and other large structures; and by high-voltage transformers than can be found in almost any large building.
female breast cancer has reached epidemic proportions, with one in ten american women developing it and one in four dying.  alarmingly, of women who develop the disease, 55% have no known risk factors.  breast cancer mortality rates are five times lower in asia and africa than in industrialized  north america and northern europe regions where emfs (electromagnetic fields) are omnipresent.

DO HIGH-VOLTAGE POWER LINES CAUSE CANCER

this is a question the some members of the community of praslin are pondering on.  not least of all because some male persons like akis, theophile, chouprah and others passed away at a relatively young age from cancer related ailments.
a growing body of scientific evidence suggest that electromagnetic fields created by everything from high-voltage utility company lines to personal computers, microwave overns, tvs and even electric blankets-- are linked to a frightening array of cancers and other serious health problems in children and adults.  in our electronic age however, it is impossible to eleiminate exposure to the myriad of electrical sources with which we come in contact on a daily basis.
research shows that power lines attract particles of radon -- a colourless, odorless gas irrefutabliy linked with cancer.

MON REPOS TO PORTRAY IT'S HERITAGE IN SOUTHERN CARNIVAL

a group of young cultural enthusiasts led by laurin dorville, marylene gaston, julitta alexander-george, vida james and angella alexander, are spearheading a move to have mon repos represented in this year's southern (vieux fort) carnival set for july 3rd and 4th.  according to laurin, if all works out well, they will portray three aspects of mon repos' history, namely; (1) kiltere nous (our culture) (2) baggai lonten (things of long ago) and (3) jeunesse atrolmen (today's youth).  our culture will feature the mythical adjiablesse, maji noir, bolom as well as personalities like sessene and ronald ferdinand.  section two will portray, modes of dress, holspoat etc., while section three, deals with youth.  we hope it will touch on sports as well, which has always been a pasttime for all societies throughout history.
the proposed venture would be a first for mon repos in a carnival extravanza at this level.  not surprisingly with someone like laurin, it may well come off.  laurin's talent and achievement is perhaps underestimated and unrecognised in the community.   unfortunately, this happens if you are not part of a recognised group.  hence the reason why some of us who acknowledge this situation should pay tribute where it is due. laurin has produced a book of poems, numerous cd's including a christmas cd, organized charitable functions for the needy, grass street pageant and was one of the main organizers of the 2004 hosting of the mon repos leg of jounee kweyol.  she was selected as the mon repos nominee for the title of youth and cultural in the 2005 national youth awards organized by the ministry of education, human resource development youth and sports.  we at monrepossports.info take the opportunity to pay tribute to this outstanding young lady and to support her in the upcoming venture.   this of course does not take away from the other members spearheading the efforts, who themselves have laudable achievements, but that is for another feature.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MARIE- THERESE "SOLOT" SERIEUX

she was on her way to sunday service, walking from lumbard to st. ann's parish church, in mon repos.  a trip that she has done on a weekly basis over the last few decades and perhaps to micoud before mon repos was designated as a parish.  solot told me that today, sunday 12th june is her birtdhay, and she is 71 years old.  those of us who know solot, will admit that she appears a lot younger.  she is one of the most dynamic and committed community activists that you will find. she has been involved in mothers & fathers group, la rose, credit union, disaster preparedness, club sixty, legion of mary, st. vincent de paul to name a few.  above all she is a charming personality who is never to shy to express her views - and with a sense of humour if necessary.  solot is also an excellent dancer and the life of any social gathering, whether is is at a chritening or a wake.  i am not her biographer but - you get the point.  happy birthday solot from the people of your community, mon repos, who all love you.
in the front row first from the left in a mother's day celebration a few years ago.  sadly some of the persons in the insert have since departed this life including bwedin, to her left and solot's   husband valmont.

WHAT IS THIS???

some of the elders amongst us would take this for granted.  it has been there for a while perhaps 45 years. it is probably the last  of three or four originally erected between the praslin and malgretoute bridge.  would someone be kind enough to explain to the younger generation, the significance of this "monument"?  a young friend of mine who has seen passed it by on a daily basis as a child going to school and church throught it was the remains of a stand-pipe.

FAREWELL TO A FRIEND AND COMRADE JULIAN "COO-COO" ROSS - A REALLY LIKABLE INDIVIDUAL

coo-coo in a typical pose.  generally a quiet and simple man who was a joy to have a friendly conversation with in matters of cricket, politics, agriculture or other community issues of the day.  he lived a simple uncomplicated life.  his love for mon repos was unquestionable.  hardly ever "limed" outside of mon repos.  apart from his family and friends, i can think of persons like joseph "augustin" mathurin, boysie, renold, patrick and ronald smith and many others in the community who will have to come to grips with missing him.  he was truely one of the last  cricket umpires to officiate for free a fact probably unknown by of current crop of cricketers.
we once again extend condolences to venessa, polly, his brothers and sisters, relatives, friends and neighbours.
go he forth and prepare the way my brother.  we shall meet some day!!
