Annual Presidents Report to the 2005 MRYSC Awards Evening
Sunday, December 25, 2005
Patience Combined School

ladies and gentlemen, a pleasant good evening to you:

it is a well-known saying that, the best preparation for tomorrow is to do todays work superbly well.  it is always such a great privilege to report to you the affiliates and the general public what has transpired over the last year under the guidance of the mon repos youth and sports council. i hope that i can deliver this report adequately well, so that we can use it to prepare for tomorrow. generally, we had a very productive year with full participation from our affiliates in most of our activities. however, some areas leave much room for improvement, particularly the club structure, punctuality of clubs at activities and the unwillingness of our younger persons to take up the mantle of leadership.

my task, however, will not be to dwell too much on these aspects, but rather, to pay homage to our many sportsmen and sportswomen in this admirable community. yes, i said admirable, because sometimes i dont think we give enough thought to the multitude of persons who just admire our community and would like to be associated with it in one way or another.  some of them may be in this gathering now. the challenges are even greater, given the fact that we are not endowed with corporate establishments like those in the towns and city, and we have to grapple with our meagre resources to make things happen.

let me attempt to summarise the work of the council over the past year. our ambitious calendar of activities actually commenced in december 2004 with the lucky 3 limited overs cricket competition, sponsored by the st. lucia national lotteries authority. this competition generated much excitement and debate among our cricketers, but the crowd support was much lower than expected.  we had ten (10) clubs doing battle for one of the most coveted cricket trophies in recent times. the preliminary rounds were very keenly contested and some records were broken. the most notable one came from the bat of garvin serieux, who hit a well-known cricket coach for six glorius sixes in an over at the mcg in a match versus south wales. pyo seemed to be unbeatable during the competition, and they proved that when they beat la pointe youth organization in a very exciting final. id like to take time out to congratulate pyo on this deserving victory and regaining lucky three supremacy.

the moment of truth was once again upon us as we prepared for yet another piton malta independence road relay on sunday, february 20, 2005. all those who were there had too much to say. the crowd witnessed one of the best relay legs at the commencement of the race, when our very own zepherinus joseph broke free from the pack and gave the roadbusters athletic club the advantage necessary to win a race of this standard. everyone was elated to see the distance between knockay and the second place athlete. we were convinced that with the slate of athletes roadbusters provided, a st. lucian club would finally beat the martiniquans at this piton malta relay. this was not to be, for the french athletes, always competing against each other under these conditions, had other ideas. at the penultimate leg, somewhere in escap, the french caught up with us, and the rest is history. in the end, it was club pelien of martinique taking away the overall championship. road busters had to settle for second place. our first affiliate across the finish line was patience youth organization. let me take this opportunity to congratulate pyo on their level of enthusiasm before and throughout the relay. we are very grateful to all those who made this activity a success - from the flower girls to the hard-working volunteers and piton malta. we dearly missed our special schools - the patience combined school and the ti rocher combined school who have become our source of inspiration over the years. i would sound like a scratched record or cd over the years if i have to highlight the limited participation from our affiliates, although we have made special allocations in the proposal for them. these words need to be echoed once again, let us not show our sponsors that we are organizing an event for outsiders while we remain as complaining bystanders.

the council was able to attract sponsorship from smj beverages through their product fruita fruit juices to execute a second cricket competition. there is always much excitement when teams that have not done too well in the first competition attempt to redeem themselves in the next. this was particularly true of grass street sports club and the malgretoute youth movement, who worked hard to become the finalists of this competition. the grass street lads worked a little harder and captured the championship trophy over malgretoute in a keenly contested game. congratulations are in order for the grass street sports club on their well-deserved victory. you have tried so hard to reach the top.

two mon repos cricket teams participated in national competitions this year. in the national lotteries under 19 competition, mon repos reached the final of this tournament and succumbed to south castries in a very low-scoring game. special commendation must be given to the manager of the team, mr. julian shah serieux, who stuck to his task with distinct determination. it was very unfortunate that he could not have been with them at the finals. it must be noted that four (4) of these players went on to represent st. lucia in the windward islands cricket tournament, namely russel emmanuel, kamel dorleon, hazel charlery and mervin peter. it would be remis of me if i did not recognize the efforts of mr. walter emmanuel as coach of the national under 19 cricket team. congratulations walter, on a job well done.

at the senior level, mon repos demolished all in their path during the preliminary rounds, and putting fear in the camp of those who had not played them yet. however, at the semi-final game against gros islet, when it mattered most, some of the key players on the team were not available for the match. mon repos was beaten by gros islet in a very unfashionable manner. for some of our players, it reflected their level of commitment to the game and members failure to think of their individual development which has pervaded our senior teams in recent times. only craig emmanuel and garey mathurin were able to make it to the senior national team. congratulations are in order for craig emmanuel, who has maintained his place on the windward islands cricket team.

the mon repos credit union responded to a request from the council to transfer the funds that were committed to a two-day cricket competition the previous year, to our premiere football championship. this competition started in july with the usual hype that football creates in the community. this competition was executed by an enthusiastic football committee comprising gaius mathurin, titus eliza, octavian wilson, randy roserie and cecile charles. the crowds came out in droves and the usual electrifying atmosphere captivated the spectators. the scramble for semi-final places continued up to the last game. when the dust settled, it was young strikers sports club and la pointe 4-h facing each other for the championship trophy. at the end of regulation time, the scores were locked at 1-all. in the penalty shoot-out which ensued, young strikers emerged victorious over 4-h by a score of 4-2. please join me in congratulating the young strikers sports club on this achievement.

good fortune continued for the council, when mr. thomas roserie, well known businessman in the community, provided sponsorship for the second football competition in september. the interest generated in this competition was just as high as the first and level of football impressed many, as teams played to number one or two in their respective zone. once again, young strikers was in the final, and believe it or not, the score at regulation time was 1-all. the difference was that the opposition was pyo this time. and like dvu, young strikers won the penalty shootout 4-2 over pyo. i hope teams would have learnt by now that you dont end a game at 1-all with strikers and expect to win the penalty shoot-out. congratulations again to young strikers sports club.

the council also hosted a scorers and umpires workshop for cricket scorers and umpires in november. the workshop was facilitated by mr. roland cox, a certified cricket scorer. it gave the participants an insight into the new developments in scoring and their responsibilities as an official in the game. the attendance was poor, but the sessions were very informative. and i venture to ask, why is something so important to both cricketers and officials poorly attended? i hasten to reply that there is no single answer to this question. the many issues that can contribute to the answer are what every community faces in youth and sports development in st. lucia. this workshop was organized to equip cricketers and officials with the knowledge and skills to commence the caribbean sports supplies limited overs competition. let us recognize and applaud the sponsorship of mr. priscillus simeon under his new brand css, creating the springboard for council activities leading into 2006.

no council report can be complete without sounding our trumpet on the development and maintenance of monrepossports.org, the website of the decade. this website has kept the mon repos diaspora in constant contact and the reviews are overwhelming. it has created a communication link with friends and relatives that no other medium could have done. if its not updated for just two days, the rude remarks to the webmaster makes you wonder whether he is paid to provide this service to the visitors to the website. you just have to visit monrepossports.org and you will have an idea of the magnitude of this important communication tool.

our general meetings during the year were not as frequent as we would desire, but discussions were quite lengthy and cordial. members expressed themselves conscientiously and many controversial matters were resolved.

in november of this year, the general body of the mon repos youth council conducted election of officers to install a new executive to lead the council to 2007. the new executive comprises:

denis james president

hyacinth dorleon vice president

nicholas jn. baptiste secretary

thomas roserie treasurer

gregor charlery assistant secretary/treasurer

terry faisal games organiser

carissa emmanuel public relations officer

please help me welcome mr. roserie and ms. emmanuel to the executive of the council.

it would be an injustice on my part to present a report and not highlight some of the short-comings of the affiliates of the mon repos youth and sports council. some clubs failure to attend meetings has directly affected their functioning. it created many communication problems. it is so ironic that we have many more phones but more problems in reaching each other. we have also realized that even those who attend the meetings have problems in disseminating the information, however pertinent or urgent, to their fellow club members. so many club members dont know who are the persons representing them at meetings.

with the multiplicity of problems confronting youth development in st. lucia, we must work together to provide young people with an enabling environment where they will be prepared to contribute. the realities seem hostile to them, although we try to say differently. as i observe the attitude of these young people to activities like awards ceremonies, where we attempt to reward and recognize them, but yet they stay away. i implore all youth leaders and those interested in youth development, let us find new ways to attract them, let us develop sound relationships with their parents and let them see that getting involved in the positive club activities is the pre-requisite to achieving greatness.

i want to encourage the young people of mon repos to build and strengthen your clubs. i constantly heard the echo that the clubs dont programme for the non-sports persons. it may be true, but remember, the club programmes for its members and if you as a non-sports person stay away from the club or organization, then the trend will continue. go in there and make that change. some of you have the benefit of higher education but you prefer to remain in your selfish intellectual cocoons instead of attempting to share the knowledge.

i will not keep you and i never meant to bore you, so may i conclude with these words, get involved in your club and council activities to build a better community.

on behalf of all the executive members i would like to extend our compliments of the season and may the good lord bless all of us, and give us wisdom and strength for 2006. i thank you.

ALL-ROUNDER CYRIL CHARLES

this captain of pyo and key player for the police cricket team had a lower than average performance in the opening game against grass street sports club.  he was bowled by mathis serieux for 16 and got the lone wicket of the said mathis serieux caught for five.

CALIXTE RESPONDS TO GUYANELLE

a characteric feature of the game of cricket, is that it can be a slow pace game which allows for crowed teasing.  at a break between the overs brian calixte of pyo, vice president of the national cricket association  (in charge of national team) could not resist the taunting from the grass street possee and had to take time-off to defend certain national selection policies and decisions taken in recent times - in the process perhaps to educate persons who are expected to serve in the future.  this would probably be of little consolation to persons who have their minds made up or notions based on hear-say.
photo insert - a previously loquacious guyanelle, when confronted appears enlightened and hopefully more informed after hearing the other side of the story.

WICKET-KEEPER ALLAN MONCHERY

he suffered the indignity of getting out caught off the first ball of the competition bowled by farrel alexander for grass street from the mon repos end of the wenn playing field on saturday 3rd december 2005.  he gave away one bye.

BRENDON "HEAVY" WILSON

he is expected to have a busy season, as he will be taking up the duties of umpiring when he is not part of pyo's strike force.   batting at number seven he got 12 runs in his opening game before going via the lbw route to elbert frederick of grass street.   known for being a deceptive bowler with swing, he had 27 runs knocked off him in five overs without getting any wicket.

GRASS STREET BEATS PYO IN OPENING GAME OF CARIBBEAN SPORTS SUPPLIES COMPETITION

in the caribbean sports supplies limited overs cricket competition, grass street secured a narrow over patience youth organization when the teams met at the wenn playing field on saturday 3rd december, 2005.  pyo batting first got 105, grass street 106 for 9.
the game between la pointe youth organization and the malgretoute youth movement scheduled for the mon repos cricket ground (mcg) on the same day had to be called off because of a damp pitch.

CLUB MEMBERS RECEIVED CERTIFICATES OF RECOGNITION

president hyacinth dorleon-norbert present magdeline "shabin" serieux with her certificate of recognition.  shabin continues to be one of the ever-present hard working members of the club. she got a rest on friday night only because the hotel catered - otherwise she would have had to do a lot of the preparation and clean-up.  netball is the only activity in which she does not currently represent the club.

A NIGHT OF SYTLE & CLASS AT FOX GROVE INN

this twenty year old club move the notch a little higher for other clubs by once again hosting their celebration at the fox grove inn.  special guests such as the outgoing president of the national youth council, silas wilson was in attendance.

DANCE - MAN SHORTAGE ON THE FLOOR

no celebration of that kind would be complete without the participants shaking a leg.   why did the males refuse to dance?  is it that sue-ann and cindy can't dance.  tessie is very good and may have to start a dancing class for the club.

MATHALINE RALLIES THE FAITHFUL

how many of those out there you think will be active in their club in 20 years time. pyo should be just about 20 years this year (subject to correction, possibly more) and as we can see in the photo another generation is already represented.  way to go, pyo.

arguably the most outstanding club amongst the mon repos youth & sports council, pyo were on the hunt for their second hold on that tittle at the national level.  this year it went to a relatively new organization from gros islet.  better luck next time pyo, or should one say grass street.

P.Y.O. WINS AGAIN

at the wenn playing field, pyo were bowled out for 137 by creation sports club, but went on to defend that total by restricting creation to 113.  top scorers for pyo were cyrille charles 45, alvin prospere 29 and alleyne prospere 15.
bowling fro creation, bernard gaston had five for 21, marcian peter three for 30 with tony tobierre and julius gaston getting one wicket each.
in their turn at the crease the main contributors for creation were bernard gaston 42, sherwin charles 13 and cletus mathurin 10.
for pyo, denis james, allyn and alvin prospere had two wickets each while cyrille charles and brendon wilson had one wicket a piece..

THE NEWLY RECONSTRUCTED PYO PAVILLION

a creditable effort by patience youth organization.  a simple structure ideally located to serve as the main cricket pavillion.  it would probably be granted six point five out of ten for a an effort after an emergency.  could have added a little more to our main pavillion at our main venue in the year 2005.

FAYTH & PAIGE - The Next Generation

does it seem like a long time ago when some of us, particularly the ladies went through a similar episode?!  there is a little more plastic now but the white doll remains - by and large.

TOO MANY COOKS???!!!

then there was the food - enough to feed dozens by all accounts.  the wenn playing field area where"bois den" is quickly becoming endangered.  hardly a week goes by without a few gallons of "bois den" being brewed.
anyway, the one pot of chicken backs, peas and you know, of course, flour - the blessed dumplings all went down well in the appetizing manner that it was prepared for.  as the saying goes, "the dish always looks more appetizing when it is prepared by someone else".

BUILDERS & ENGINEERS AT WORK - MORE THAN PYO HAS BEEN ABLE TO REGISTER FOR A CRICKET GAME, ON SOME OCCASION

the interest and excitement exhibited on saturday 6 february would leave a passerby with the impression that the eight wonder of the world is being undertaken.
